WRITING BACKGROUND
I have written three books, as well as multiple short stories, and I am working on book no. 4. I started writing my first short story that I actually finished in 2020 when I had two months off from my internship, as the company figured out how to go remote, at the beginning of the COVID 19 pandemic. I wanted to treat that time as though I was a full-time writer so I didn’t feel like it was a waste and it was exactly what I needed.
Once I finished all my revisions of that short story (more of a novelette at around 10,000 words) I moved on to my first novel in July 2020. I let myself write the book as poorly as I needed to with the sole intention of me finishing it to prove that I could. I finished it in September of 2020 after writing 80,000 words in July and taking the month of August off.
Since then, I have written two more books, one in 2021 after tabling a couple of stories that I started but wasn’t ready for and then in February 2022 I started my third book which I wrote, revised multiple times, and started querying in July 2022. I am currently still looking for an agent for that novel right now.
WRITING PROJECTS
Book No. 4: I started writing my fourth novel at the beginning of September 2022 after starting a thriller series and realizing it wasn’t what I wanted to write and scrapping it. This book, project A and it is well underway. I am a little over 20,000 words into it and picking up speed. It is already winning over my heart and I am thoroughly enjoying it which is all I can ask for from a project.
October Writing Goals: I know that many people use October as prep time for NANO WRIMO, however, due to the fact that I am already in the middle of working on my current project, I am focusing on drafting that. My goal is to make October my highest word count month so far this year but I would like to write 2,000 words a day (or average that). I am also working on some short stories that I plan to submit to literary magazines along the way and I will give an update if and when any of those get published. I also have a goal that I will write more each day than the last for the whole month but if I fail one of the days then I only have to beat that word count as opposed to trying to increase over the previous day.
THOUGHTS ON NANO WRIMO
This is the year I will actually win NANO WRIMO. Last year I did 40,000 words and was quite close but I let myself slow down in order to finish book no. 3 in December and not burn me out. I will still be working on book no. 4 in November even if I write 60,000 words this month. However, I will most likely finish the book before I hit 50,000 in November. If this happens, then I will either write a bunch of short stories and novelettes or I will launch right into Book no. 5. (note: books 1-4 are not in the same series at all) This just depends on where I’m at with it and how much worldbuilding might need to be done.
HANDWRITING EXPERIMENT
I have also tried a new experiment . I’d started handwriting my short stories to try it out and found that I wanted to write the short stories more than my novel. I knew that I was still in love with my novel so I attributed it to handwriting. So, I decided to write a chapter by hand and I’m not sure I’ll ever go back. My brain works differently when I write by hand and I’m much less distracted. I will update this if anything changes.
WRITING SLOWER SO I CAN WRITE MORE AND BE MORE PRODUCTIVE
I am also trying to write slower in order to have to do less work in the revision stage and have a cleaner first draft. I hate revisions. I was trying to accomplish this when I was still typing out my first drafts. Writing by hand, however, solved this issue for me and slowed me down to the point that I was less likely to write bad ideas.
I am mainly a fantasy and science fiction writer but I enjoy all types of speculative fiction and plan on trying out a lot of stories in the speculative fiction category.
